“You are here for a reason.”

Renew me

Psalm 51 is well known by most church going folks as David’s prayer to God after his great sin and cover up with Bathsheeba. After finally being confronted with his sin, he was moved to brokeness and repentance and cried out “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”  In this prayer David is certainly crying out for forgiveness and cleansing and to come back to the intimacy with God that he was new. What catches my attention is that he also asked God to renew a right spirit within him. It wasn’t just forgive me for what I have done but also change me so that I will never become this same man again. This is what true repentance is about. It’s not just forgiveness for wrongs but a desire to have a changed heart and actions and this only comes by the renewing power of God. Renewal is how God breaks the sinful habits and destructive cycles of our life. This renewing power is what brings hope that God can change us. Even if you have struggled with sin for decades, God can change and renew you. Maybe you haven’t been the husband or father that you should have been and trying to break the cycle of your old ways is hard, but guess what? God can renew you with His spirit. Ask yourself this question: Am I seeking removal of guilt or am I seeking a new way of life and the character of Jesus Christ himself?
